A Natural Easter {Baby Sensory Play}

Hey there! Squishels and Mummy A from Squishels and Me, here for the March theme of ‘sensory play’. We’ve taken this theme and thrown a little bit of an Easter spin on it as we get ready for Easter with our wonderful new playgym.

Little Squishels was gifted a beautiful wooden play arch made by her aunt and uncle this Easter. It was made of a deep Tassie Oak, adorned with three wooden rings hanging two wooden bunnies and an Easter egg with gold stripes.

Squishels took to her new play-gym with such delight. She loved grabbing at the egg, listening to us tell her that bunnies go ‘hop, hop’, watching how the sun played against the metallic stripes on the eggs.

It engaged her sense of smell with such a rich aroma of wood oiled with olive oil- a lovely, comforting smell of home.

It engaged her sense of touch as she batted at the egg and the bunnies, feeling the feel of the rope that held the legs of the arch apart, feeling the wood of the legs.

It engaged her sense of sight as she saw the deep brown of the bunny contrasted with the white and gold of the egg and the green or white and black of the ribbons.

It engaged her sense of taste as she got the occasional lick of the bunnies.

It engaged her sense of sound as the bunnies and the eggs bounced off each other, and as Mummy told her stories of bunnies that go hopping along and chickens that lay eggs.

A wooden play-gym is such a lovely open-ended toy. As Squishels is young, it helps to engage her senses, and encourage tummy time. As she grows older, her cousins have shown it can be used as a tunnel, as a cave, as a playspace and as a quiet space. It folds away when not in use, and can have many different toys hanging off to engage different senses and different stories.

This Easter, it has helped to tell many stories of bunnies, and Easter, and chickens, as well as stories of how her uncle and aunt crafted a beautiful play piece with such love, and giggles of delight as her senses were engaged.
